The Indian festival of Holi, the “Festival of Colors,” was celebrated
in Redmond, Washington on March 23, 2013. Sponsored by the Ve-
dic Cultural Center of Sammamish, Washington, the festival was a
boisterous, joyous celebration of the beginning of Spring featuring
tasty vegetarian Indian food, live music and dancing, and of course
the event all were waiting for - the throwing of brightly colored
cornstarch. Novices to this event, my friends and I were welcomed
into the fold – we donned our white tunics and got our bags of per-
fumed and colored dust, then wandered over to the food stalls and
sampled the samosas and pakoras. A live band was playing. At last,
the start of the color throwing was announced, and the crowd gath-
ered in the center of the park. A short countdown – “hey, no throw-
ing until the countdown hits zero!” – and a happy pandemonium
ensued, with great clouds of brilliant colors flying through the air.
