 Short history of Tiruchendur – the famous temple town  

Lord Shiva had two sons, Ganapathi the half elephant and half man, 
and Muruga (also known as Skantha, Karthikeya or Subramanya). 
Muruga is a faithful defender of the demigods. In a bale with a de‐
mon named King Surapadma, Muruga defeated him. The demon was 
giganc. When Muruga killed him there was so much blood spilled 
that the place of the bale was called Senthur which literally trans‐
lates from the Tamil language as the red place. Because Muruga 
fought to liberate the demigods and especially Lord Indra who was a 
capve of the demon, the area  of the bale became known as Tiru‐
chendur. The prefix ru or thiru means holy or sacred in the Tamil lan‐
guage. Thus Tiruchendur is the holy place where Muruga killed the 
demon Surapadma, whose blood stained everything in the area. 
There are six famous pilgrimage sites where Muruga is worshipped in 
Tamil Nadu. Tiruchendur is the second of the six pilgrimage where his 
deity is worshipped. The temple is also the second richest temple in 
Tamil Nadu.  It aracts multudes of visitors and devout Hindus from
