Devotional service to Krishna is the ultimate beneficial activity for everyone. This is described by Krishna, “In this endeavor there is no loss or diminution, and a little advancement on this path can protect one from the most dangerous type of fear.” (Bg 2.40) One who serves Krishna sincerely is never bereft of the positive effects because the results will remain permanent. If one performs 1% of service in this life, the next time he be- gins service again in this life or any future life he begins from 2%. As far as material things are concerned, whatever one gains in the world will be lost when the body is finished. How- ever, since all living entities are eternal souls, spiritual assets like the positive effect of devotional service remain eternally an asset and gradually fructify like a seed that sprouts into a wonderful plant with fruits and flowers. Interest in Krishna consciousness is an exceptional awaken- ing. Lord Krishna reveals that out of many millions of persons only one is interested in achieving the perfection of spiritual life. It is a rare achievement to love God and dedicate one’s energy to serving the Lord. Most people are attracted by illu- sory goals of life. They think that the perfection of life is eat- ing sumptuous food, sleeping comfortably and having an ac- tive sex life. All these activities require a good income that forces people to work very hard for most of their lifetime. People waste their time in pursuing temporary goals and avoid striving for the service and love of God. Intelligent persons should allocate some time every day for developing Krishna consciousness. They should think, “I have enjoyed eating and sleeping for so many lives in the 8.4 mil- lion species of life through the repeated cycle of birth and death. These things are available in every species of life. But, it is only in the human form that I have the potential to free myself from this oppressive cycle of birth and death. Let me choose to restrict the four principles of animal life – eating, sleeping, mating and defending. At least in my spare time, let me develop Krishna consciousness and make a success of my life through progressive spiritual activity. Let me try for pure love of God and share this marvelous consciousness with oth- ers.” 47
